Woman reading a newspaperA lot of things get better with age. But unfortunately, this isn’t the case when it comes to our eyesight. If you’re over the age of 40, chances are you’ve noticed a significant change in your near vision. If your favorite book is looking more and more blurry as time goes on, you may be experiencing the all-too-common condition called presbyopia.

Tired of holding your book, menu or phone at an arms length just to read the words? It may be time for a solution. If you’re one of the many that hates the look or inconvenience of reading glasses, the KAMRA inlay may be right for you.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an age-related refractive error that generally occurs around one’s middle age. It makes near objects appear blurry. Most people find that holding an object farther away makes it easier to focus on. This is because the lens in the eye becomes more stiff with age, and less flexible. This means that it is no longer able to flex in order to focus on close objects.

There are multiple avenues you can take to treat presbyopia. Reading glasses are generally the first method used. However, many people hate the way reading glasses age them, not to mention reaching for them every time they need to read a label. The constant on and off that comes with reading glasses can be very frustrating.

That’s where the KAMRA corneal inlay comes in.

What is KAMRA?

The KAMRA corneal inlay is a revolutionary, and relatively new presbyopia correction device. The KAMRA inlay is implanted into the cornea of one of your eyes. The KAMRA inlay is a tiny, donut shaped ring that acts as a pinhole. This allows your eyes to focus up close again! The KAMRA inlay is only implanted into one eye, ensuring that you keep your clear distance vision as well.

After KAMRA, patients notice a huge improvement in their near vision, and many people are able to get rid of their reading glasses altogether! Minnesota Eye Consultants offers KAMRA in Minneapolis, as well as several other locations around Minnesota.

The KAMRA Procedure

The KAMRA inlay procedure is quite simple and quick. Essentially, your doctor will create either a small pocket or flap in your cornea using a laser. Through this incision, your doctor will position the KAMRA inlay directly over your pupil. The pinhole will be centered on the pupil and allow your vision to become more focused! After the KAMRA inlay is positioned correctly, the corneal incision is smoothed over. No stitches are necessary after the KAMRA inlay procedure!

The recovery time associated with KAMRA is minimal, with most people able to return to everyday activities the next day. Vision may fluctuate for a few weeks as your eyes learn to work together. Overall, most people notice a huge improvement almost immediately after surgery, and experience full results a few weeks late.

Ready to toss those reading glasses to the side? Minnesota Eye Consultants offer KAMRA consultations in Minneapolis, Woodbury, Blaine, Falcon Heights and more! This life-changing procedure can be a reality for you. Just contact Minnesota Eye Consultants to schedule your consultation, and start your journey to clearer near vision!

Man reading a magazine with coffeeAcuFocus released a national press release in May regarding the KAMRA Corneal Inlay, a popular near vision-changing procedure for patients battling Presbyopia.

Presbyopia happens naturally with age and slowly starts to steal away near vision, leaving folks frustrated while trying to complete near tasks without the assistance of reading glasses. The KAMRA Corneal Inlay is performed at Minnesota Eye Consultants by our skilled corneal surgeons and helps to bring the near vision back with less dependence on reading glasses.

In the AcuFocus press release, they highlight Mike Thomas, a photographer who underwent the KAMRA procedure and was thrilled when the surgery brought his “sweet spot” back into focus. Read the full press release for more of Mike’s story.

Closeup of glassesIt’s been over a year now that we’ve been offering the revolutionary KAMRA corneal inlay procedure for patients struggling with reading glasses. Presbyopia, or the loss of the flexibility in the natural lens to see both near and far objects, tends to rear its ugly head around age 40. Folks start to notice they have a more difficult time reading in dim light and may find themselves holding the restaurant menu out a little further than normal. Although a quick fix, reading glasses aren’t ideal for everyone. Enter: the KAMRA corneal inlay procedure.

This tiny inlay utilizes small aperture optics and is surgically inserted into the non-dominant eye. The procedure offers treatment for near, or reading, vision with the goal of patients having less dependence on reading glasses.

The KAMRA inlay is offered at the Bloomington office and is performed in our Laser Suite by the following surgeons: Drs. Richard L. Lindstrom, David R. Hardten, Elizabeth A. Davis, and Sherman W. Reeves. With the exception of a few restrictions, recovery is fairly simple, with most patients returning to work and their normal daily activities the following day.

If you’re interested in more information on the KAMRA corneal inlay, visit our website or call our Refractive Specialist, Sue, at 952-567-6020.

The KAMRA inlay treatment is an eye procedure that restores near vision and frees you from the constant frustrations of reading glasses. On Wednesday, July 15th, Dr. Richard Lindstrom performed the first four Acufocus KAMRA corneal inlay treatments in this region. All surgeries went well, and each patient was happy on post-op day one!

Dr. Lindstrom with Linda N.

Our patient, Linda N., shared this image with us and also stated: “I’m so glad I decided to move forward with this procedure. I’ve been struggling with my reading vision for the last 5 years and no other solutions proved effective. I’ve been so happy with my results and am looking forward to a bright future with the KAMRA corneal inlay!”

Not everyone qualifies for the KAMRA inlay procedure, but the ideal candidate is between the ages of 45-60, uses glasses for reading only, does not have issues with Dry Eye and hasn’t had any previous eye surgery. If you’re tired of wearing reading glasses and would like more information about the KAMRA corneal inlay procedure, please contact us at 952-567-6020.
